About Maison Ousmane SOW

Head, arms and back of the Sphinx are symbolically represented in a resolutely contemporary architecture that he had conceived as a work in its own right. This building now houses around thirty original works .

The SPHINX: the House and the Artist

His house in Dakar, Ousmane Sow had it built according to his idea, like a sculpture, starting from a model he had made. He had named it The Sphinx, when he was considering creating a series on the Egyptians. And he had covered the walls with the material with which he covered his sculptures. It was completed in 1999 and he lived there until his death on December 1, 2016. He will say in interviews that this house was the only place where he could sculpt.
